On Color
While I am primarily a cinematographer/camera operator, I have largely colored my own footage or have been asked to grade the footage I have shot for clients. I find that having an understanding of the fundamentals of color science can aid the performance of a cinematographer tremendously.
By understanding the picture profiles of the camera I am using, and having experience pulling in the proper gamma levels and color after the fact, it helps inform how to properly expose the image on set, and more importantly how to set up the director, editor, and colorist for success when you are not also in any of those roles.
While I have the a lot of experience with Black Magic Cameras, I also have spent a length of time shooting on Sony and grading footage. By doing this I have been able to get footage to match when the two brands have been used on the same shoot, and were needed to match.
I primarily use Davinci Resolve 14, though I also have used Adobe Premiere's Lumetri when required.
